Probiotics are micro-organisms that offer some form of health benefit to the host. They can be found in various fermented foods with active live cultures (e.g. yogurt), or contain beneficial soil-based organisms instead of dairy-based bacteria. This is the direction chosen with this Clark product: no fermented product but soil-based bacteria.

Why a soil-based probiotic rather than lactic ferments?

The lactic acid-based bacteria in probiotics have to fight their way through the hostile, acidic environment of the stomach, with the result that considerably fewer reach the small intestine. This is why most nutritionists recommend using a probiotic with a high CFU count, to ensure that enough bacteria reach their destination. Soil-based organisms are endospore-forming bacteria, naturally hardier and better able to withstand the harsh environment of the stomach and, ultimately, more likely to make it intact to the small intestine. What's more, this eliminates the need for special coatings or manufacturing techniques used to supply lactic acid-based bacteria.

By reintroducing soil-based organisms into our intestines, we increase the diversity of beneficial bacteria in our intestines, helping to improve digestion, boost immunity and much more. Solid Based Organisms (SBOs) are known to reduce abdominal discomfort, bloating, nausea, flatulence and constipation. Specific SBOs have also been shown to secrete proteins that activate the immune system, stimulating the production of white blood cells and antibodies.
