What's it all about?
Amino acids are the molecular building blocks of proteins; in other words, a protein is nothing more than an association of amino acids. Their presence is necessary for virtually all biological processes, although the body doesn't always make as many as it needs.
The body is capable of transforming certain amino acids into other amino acids, or of manufacturing them itself. But one category of amino acids is supplied by the diet; these are called "essential amino acids", because the body cannot manufacture them itself. There are eight of these: isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. Dr Clark's essential amino acid complex includes these eight elements, with the addition of cysteine for better coverage. Unlike other nutrients, the body cannot store essential amino acids. If the daily intake is insufficient, the body will draw the amino acids it needs directly from muscle tissue.
A deficiency in essential amino acids can lead to reduced immunity, digestive problems, depression, fertility problems, reduced mental alertness, stunted growth in children and many other health problems.
